Quick And Easy Steps To Refresh Your Appearance

As I always tell my patients, good skin is at the heart of a healthy looking, youthful appearance. We often underestimate the effect dull and tired skin has on how old we look. If it is lacklustre, for example, it can add years to your face, and if it is dehydrated (a very common issue), it can lead to fine lines, wrinkles and expression lines that give a ‘creped’ effect.

The flipside of this is that healthy-looking skin can also have a huge overall effect on our appearance, and if you are keen to retain a youthful look or want to make the most of what you have, for as long as possible, it is worth considering your skin and good skincare before you consider surgical or non-surgical procedures.

To start off, a simple level of good skincare products and a skincare regime can have quite an impact on how you look. This is particularly true if you are young and are lucky enough to not yet have to deal with any major ageing issues, as I outlined in a previous blog on skincare in your 20s.

Taking care of your skin day-to-day is the best place to start. Cleanse and moisturise daily and use an exfoliator regularly to slough off dead skin cells. This will smooth the complexion, helping to bring back brightness, and it will also enable your skincare to perform more effectively.

When it comes to products, look for cosmeceutical brands, as opposed to drugstore or over-the- counter brands. Cosmeceuticals (so named because they are a combination of cosmetic and pharmaceutical products) have high levels of efficacy and can give real results. They have been rigorously tested and are as close as companies can get to medical grade formulations, without having to undergo the extensive and costly accreditation process).

Make sure to protect skin daily from the damaging effects of the sun’s UV rays. UV is responsible for many of the signs of ageing - dull skin, a lack of volume, pigmentation and wrinkles – so a daily SPF is essential.

Your diet is very important too, of course. Make sure you’re getting the recommended five portions of fruit and veg every day – eat a wide variety to boost the amount of minerals, vitamins and antioxidants in your diet.

Cut back on salt and sugar too. There is increasing research into the effect of sugar and a process called glycation on skin and skin ageing. Water is also essential and sometimes just making sure to drink plenty of water or herbal teas will soften or get rid of the dehydration lines I mentioned earlier.

Once you get the basics right, your skin will most likely look brighter and more vibrant. Then, later on or if a particular concern becomes apparent, you can consider a variety of treatments to improve things.

Some well-placed fillers can plump out fine lines or an area that seems to have lost volume, such as the labiomental crease or around the eye area, while Botox injections can not only temporarily diminish frown lines or deep wrinkles, they can also give the face an overall refreshed appearance.

Skincare peels can also be a very effective way to treat fine lines or those early signs of ageing – it is particularly good around the eye area, while non-surgical facial rejuvenation treatments such as threadlift can also revitalise your look and restore your youthful appearance.

No matter what treatment you choose from the wide range of options open to you, the key is a subtle, less is more approach, to keep you looking youthful and fresh, naturally, and that all starts with taking good care of your skin daily.
