Tackling The Midriff To Restore Or Enhance Body Shape

If you are unhappy with your body shape, upping your exercise levels and taking a look at your diet are usually the first steps on the road to getting a better body contour. However, for a lot of people, there can be issues that just seem impossible to resolve. Fit people can retain a paunch or excess fat around their stomachs that refuses to shift, despite lots of exercise and a healthy diet. Others who have perhaps undergone significant weight loss, or women whose bodies have changed because of childbirth, can also end up with an excess of fat or tissue around the midriff.

This can be quite troubling for a person, and can have a negative impact on their self-esteem and even the clothes they wear day-to-day. This area of the body can be one of the most difficult to address as the stubborn fat pockets can be hard to shift. Some fat tissue can be improved with minimally invasive devices using various medical technologies based on ultrasound, laser, cooling or radio-frequency principles. However, if there is significant excess of skin and fatty tissue, due to weight loss or pregnancy, surgery is the only way to remove it.

Generally speaking, there are a number of body contouring treatments that can help to restore a firm, contoured shape to the stomach or midriff. Liposuction can be very helpful when it comes to a paunch or those stubborn pockets of fat around the waist. It works to smooth out uneven, bumpy areas, helping to sculpt out contours and give the whole area more definition.

Liposuction – often referred to as lipo – was in the past a quite serious operation and posed a lot of risk to the patient, but advances in the techniques used have seen it become much safer, resulting in less blood loss for the patient.

The procedure can be performed under either local or general anaesthetic. Special probes are inserted through small incisions in the skin and the excess fat is removed. A skilled surgeon will be able to perform the procedure to give the best possible, most aesthetically pleasing results.

Another option to trim and tighten up the midriff is tummy tuck surgery. Also known as abdominoplasty, this procedure is effective in the removal of excess fat and/or skin, tightening lax muscles and smoothing out the contours of the abdomen to great effect.

As with all surgeries, a detailed and comprehensive consultation phase is essential. This allows the surgeon to establish what they’re dealing with and also to make sure both surgeon and patient know what is possible from the surgery.

The procedure itself is often performed under general anaesthetic and can last from between three and five hours. It involves making an incision across the tummy (abdomen). The excess skin and fat can be taken away and the surgeon can also reinforce the muscles in this area if needed. The incisions are then closed up layer by layer using skilled plastic surgery techniques, which helps to minimise the chance of complications.

Results from both procedures can be very impressive. In particular, I find that a tummy tuck has a very high patient satisfaction rate. They can restore smooth, firm contours to the area and results can be very long-lasting.

It is, as I mentioned in a previous blog, important to remember that results should be sustained through a healthy diet and adequate exercise in the future.

The proper aftercare, recovery regime and a healthy lifestyle will ensure you can keep your enhanced body shape for longer, meaning you can enjoy your newfound confidence in your appearance for years to come.
