So you’re considering…. Chin augmentation

November 3, 2016

What is it:

Also called aesthetic genioplasty, it a procedure or number of procedures to improve the appearance of the chin.

Why do people have it done?

To correct a misshapen chin, or a chin they are unhappy with because they think it is too small, too large or too square. It can be done alongside with facelift surgery in order to achieve facial harmony which translate into an overall aesthetically pleasing look.

Chin

The underlying bones of the face are really what gives it its shape and structure. The skin and soft tissues undoubtedly play a large role in our appearance but it is the bones that define the face. They make up the structure on which everything else lies.

A small chin (also known as a retruded chin) can result in a weakness in the lower face, while a larger chin can also cause issues for a person. As a Consultant Plastic Surgeon practicing at the Blackrock Clinic, I have seen that unhappiness with a facial feature has a real impact on self- esteem and it is very difficult to hide a chin you’re unhappy with.

Some surgeons would say aesthetic genioplasty to correct a chin can have as significant effect on the overall appearance as a rhinoplasty (nose job). A skilled surgeon will be able to tailor treatment to suit the individual and ensure results sit as harmoniously as possible within the rest of the patient’s face.

Chin augmentation can be carried out using implants (this procedure is known as implants genioplasty) and also by using surgery to manipulate the bony chin (referred to as osseous genioplasty). Alloplastic implants are mainly used if the patient just needs better definition in the profile of the chin. When a more 3D improvement is needed in the area, osseous genioplasty is generally required.

About 20% of people undergoing a facelift procedure will also require chin augmentation. Chin augmentation can also incorporate liposuction to remove stubborn fatty deposits (a double chin). As with all cosmetic procedures carried out on the face, a highly-skilled and experienced hand – and eye is needed.

Surgical manipulation of the chin requires an in-depth understanding of the bone architecture and an artistic eye to achieve the best, aesthetic outcome for the patient. Though rare, as surgery is involved, most cosmetic procedures come with potential risks and chin augmentation surgery can result in faulty positioning (malposition), infection, thinning of the overlying soft tissues, and implant exposure.

More info:

Chin implants can be inserted via a small incision just underneath the chin or through the mouth – incisions will also be made in these areas in the case of a chin reduction. Every patient is different but the operation usually takes one to three hours, with patients leaving hospital on the same day.

Results:

Patients may experience some bruising and swelling for a few days after surgery. Swelling should subside after a number of weeks and once healed fully, chin augmentation can result in a better- looking smile arc, a more defined profile and more symmetrical face.
