Liposuction and the Importance of a Tailored Approach to Body Contouring

Tailored Approach

There are a lot of general misconceptions out there about the world of cosmetic surgery treatments and enhancements, and with liposuction, this is particularly true. One such misconception is that liposuction is a significant weight loss procedure that removes great quantities of excess fat. Another is that it is an alternative to dieting or a healthy lifestyle. Neither of these is accurate.

Liposuction, or to use its common nickname 'lipo', is a targeted treatment that streamlines specific areas of the body. It can be seen as a sort of ‘problem solver’, as it is very effective at dealing with areas that have caused concern or upset to a patient.

Those areas in question that cause a loss of self-confidence or general dissatisfaction with how we look are affected by stubborn pockets of fat that just refuse to move, despite exercise and a good diet. The more common problems are seen in the tummy or abdomen, the bottom and lower body, the backs of the arms, and under the chin.

While it is sometimes misunderstood, I think that liposuction is a very useful treatment when utilised correctly. It is a form of body contouring surgery and for me, it is great for treating issues with excess fat on those above-mentioned places, as well as others areas such as the thighs.

It is possible that more than one area of the body can be worked on during the same procedure, if needed, and liposuction can also be teamed with other procedures if required. However, it must be noted that liposuction should not be seen as a way to get rid of huge amounts of fat, and is definitely not an alternative to a healthy diet and exercise.

Wherever the area of concern for the patient, the most important thing with liposuction is to take what I would call a tailored approach. This is why you need to go to an accredited, reliable surgeon for any sort of treatment.

It is not a one-size-fits-all treatment and your surgeon will need to have an aesthetic eye, to properly deal with the problem areas while making sure the results sit well with the rest of your features and work in harmony. If you can imagine it as a sculpting process, the excess fat in the problem areas needs to be removed, while keeping everything else in the area in perspective and proportion, working well, visually, alongside the spot that has been treated.

Tailored Approach 2

No two people are the same and everyone will have different issues they want to address. A comprehensive consultation is really where the hard work is done. Your surgeon will discuss your concerns, and you can both outline what possible results you can achieve from the treatment.

New 3D imaging devices and software can be a great help here, as your surgeon will be able to show you a visual representation of what is achievable - you will be able to see images of the expected effects of the surgery on your body.

Sometimes patients come to me and request liposuction, but it turns out that the main reason for their seeking treatment is that they just want to deal with a particular concern. In some instances, it may be the case that liposuction isn't the best option for them and another procedure or treatment – for example, a tummy tuck - will address their concern much more effectively.

The opposite can also be the case too - with patients initially seeking something like a body lift, for example, when in fact sometimes liposuction would be the better, and easier, solution for their particular concerns.

A good cosmetic plastic surgeon will take the circumstances and issues of concern of each patient into account and will make the best recommendations for them. That way, you are maximising the chance for good, aesthetically pleasing results, no matter what area you are hoping to improve upon.

If you are considering liposuction or any other cosmetic surgery procedure, I can advise on the best options for you. Contact us to arrange a consultation.
