earFold: A New Innovation To Correct Prominent Ears

January 6, 2017
Ear Fold 1

It may be surprising to hear, but ear correction is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures currently being done in Ireland. Having protruding ears can significantly impact on self-esteem and people can be very self-conscious about their appearance, particularly when they are in their teens.

In the past, we had to do a complicated surgical procedure to pin the ears back, but I am delighted to say that thanks to medical advancements, there is a new option. Today, 80% of patients don’t necessarily need to have that surgery performed to improve the appearance of their ears.

A simple invention called the earFold device has proven to be extremely effective. These are metal alloy clips we use to pin back the ears of a patient, to create a customised result.

I have many teenagers coming to see me about correcting over-prominent ears, but I also have patients from 7 to 50 seeking to correct this condition. All cosmetic surgeons need to listen carefully to what their patients tell them about how they feel regarding the aspects of their appearance they would like to correct or enhance, and this should be a deciding factor in choosing the right surgeon for your needs. I always suggest what I feel will be the treatment that will give the best outcome for the patient, and for ear correction, I would say that I recommend this product to most of them.

During the first consultation, I will go through the relevant history and clinical examination to assess the patient’s concerns, in this case, prominent ears. I will guide them through the options of either earFold or Standard Ear Correction Surgery. I will also discuss any risks and concerns regarding the procedures.

If the earFold system is the right option, I will attach the earFold clip (Pre-fold) to the outside of a patient’s ear so they can see immediately what the results will look like. This is very helpful as they can see what can be achieved in a very real way and can then make an informed decision on what they want done. What you see is exactly what you get.

Of note, the pre-fold clips are an exact replica of the actual earFold clip without the anchoring points on the clips (see photo below). I can show what the ears will look like with one clip on each ear, or two clips, and so on. The majority of patients usually require one clip on each ear to correct their prominent ears.

On the day of the surgery, I will apply the clips on the same location on the ears as recorded from the previous consultation. If the clips improve the ear to the patient’s satisfaction, we can then proceed. I can then inject the numbing agent (the patient can be awake for all of this). I then use a special introducer to insert the earFold clip internally, where it does exactly what the patient saw when they first tried it on externally.

This EarFold System for the correction of prominent ears is a minimally invasive treatment and only takes about 20 minutes. Best of all, it can be done under local anaesthetic, so there are fewer risks and side effects than there would be with other cosmetic surgery procedures. Some patients would prefer not to go under general anaesthetic to have a procedure done, and in the case of teenagers and children, many parents would rather avoid the general anaesthetic option if possible.

However, if the patient wants more of a change than what the ear clips can provide, then a surgical procedure would be necessary, but in my experience, most patients who decide to have the earFold device installed are more than happy with the result.

At present I am one of only a few cosmetic surgeons in Ireland offering this revolutionary procedure, but I think earFold is really going to take off as a viable and effective alternative to ear correction surgery. The cost is significantly less than the standard ear correction surgery.

As well as the fact that it can be done quickly, easily and under local anaesthetic, it is also a reversible procedure. If a patient decides afterwards that they want to have further work done and undergo surgery, they can do that too.

It’s a less invasive and more effective way of correcting prominent ears and I really would recommend it. You can read more about the procedure here: http://www.earfold.com/
