Common Aesthetic Issues and the Cosmetic Surgery Procedures to Treat Them

As cosmetic surgery procedures become more commonplace, people are starting to address long-standing concerns that can often have a serious impact on self-esteem. Of course, each patient is an individual and they will have their own specific circumstances, so what might work for one might not be the best course of action for another.

This is why it’s very important to choose an experienced and accredited plastic surgeon who will discuss and fully explain the various options and procedures that are available, and what the best course of action is for each person.

Often I’ve had patients come to me requesting a specific procedure, but in fact something else turns out to be the best treatment for their concern. You should always feel completely comfortable with your surgeon’s recommendations and trust that they are advising the best course of action for you.

However, there are some broad solutions to common issues which I have listed below.

Concern: Large nose, bump on the bridge of the nose or misshapen nose

Treatment: Rhinoplasty (also referred to as a nose job)

This is one of my favourite procedures to perform as it can bring such a high level of patient satisfaction. It can also have a significant effect on a person’s appearance, adding symmetry to the features. Rhinoplasty can be used to reduce or increase the size of the nose, change its shape or correct bumps and other unwanted features.

Concern: Large tummy

Treatment: Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) or liposuction

The tummy is one of the most common areas of concern for people, with many people losing self- esteem because of changes to their stomach as a result of childbirth, weight loss, or as a result of obesity, for example.

A tummy tuck involves the sculpting of the patient’s abdomen to restore firmness and a smooth silhouette, restoring confidence in the patient, while liposuction is effective for pockets of stubborn fat that are proving resistant to diet and exercise.

Concern: Aging face

Treatment: Facelift, neck lift, fillers

A broad topic, there is much that can be done to improve the appearance of a face that is showing signs of aging. As we get older we lose volume in this area, resulting in sagging skin, jowls and usually an overall aged appearance.

There are some very effective procedures available, from a full facelift to firm and tighten the contours of the face, to the strategic use of Botox and fillers to reduce and smooth the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Sometimes a combination of procedures works best and a skilled surgeon should be able to present a customised plan for each individual.

Concern: Jowls or excess fat in the neck area

Treatment: Liposuction, neck lift

It is quite surprising just how much of an aging effect this concern can have on the overall appearance. The loss of jaw definition as we age can result in a fullness in the neck area.

While a neck lift, or lower rhytidectomy, works well for some patients, liposuction in this area can also be very effective, as can a combination of both to achieve an aesthetically pleasing neck appearance.
