Eddie, 52, from County Wicklow, went to his GP when he developed an open wound on his lip. The lesion wouldn’t heal so Eddie consulted his doctor, who gave him a referral letter for a consultant plastic surgeon. “My wife went on the Internet and looked up reviews and decided that Mr Chan sounded ideal for my needs,” Eddie explains.

Two weeks later, Eddie found himself having a consultation with Mr Chan in Blackrock Clinic. He had been diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma.

According to the Irish Cancer Society, squamous cell carcinoma is the second most common form of cancer here in Ireland. It is a cancer of the squamous cells, which are nearest the surface of the skin. Commonly found on the face, lip, ears, neck hands or arms, this form of skin cancer often looks like a firm red lump. It can also appear as a flat lump with a scaly surface.

Faced with this skin cancer diagnosis, Eddie was very happy with how his consultation with Mr Chan went. “He was so down-to-earth and professional all at the same time,” Eddie explains. “He answered all our questions and didn’t hide anything from us regarding outcomes.”

After the consultation, Eddie had an operation to remove the lesion on his lip and also had a lesion on his back removed by Mr Chan at a later date. According to Mr Chan, Eddie underwent a very complex reconstructive surgery but was able to achieve a very good outcome.

“I found the recovery time after the surgeries was very quick,” Eddie says, adding, “I had a problem with my back healing and contacted Mr Chan and he saw me immediately to sort this out.”

Eddie has now fully recovered from the surgeries and is “delighted and relieved” that the operations turned out so well. “I have recovered now and my lip looks amazing, nobody can believe the outcome,” he says.

He describes Mr Chan as “gentle and professional,” adding, “He speaks to you as if he knows you. I have met him outside my appointments by accident and he remembered immediately and knew my name. He is a real gentleman.”

Having made a full recovery, Eddie is very happy with how everything went and his overall experience with Mr Chan. “I would recommend Mr Chan without doubt,” he says, “he is so professional and efficient but so understanding too. I owe him a lot and I can’t thank him enough.”
